Finding an affordable hotel in Washington, DC during the busy summer season is a seemingly impossible feat. Before I moved to DC, a friend and I paid almost $200 for a night at a Holiday Inn in Virginia. So, imagine my delight when I found a boutique hotel in one of my favorite neighborhoods at an insanely affordable rate!
If you haven’t heard of Hotel Tonight, and are traveling anytime soon, download this app immediately! Hotel Tonight and it’s flash sales have saved me multiple times after being stranded somewhere because of a missed flight or change of heart.
Earlier this month, I missed my flight home after moving out of my apartment. It was a stressful day – I didn’t want to be there nor did I want to waste funds on a hotel in a city I called home for the last several years. Hotel Tonight softened this blow. Thanks to this awesome app, I was able to book a room at Kimpton’s Hotel Helix, for less than $100. I’m not sure if this is a rarity, but the Hotel Tonight rate was at least $40-50 less than what Orbitz or Expedia’s price.
The hotel itself was great – I loved the theme, and it’s located in Logan Circle, a neighborhood I love for it’s tree-lined streets and cafes.
Unfortunately, there was an issue with the room’s plumbing, which resulted in a less than pleasant stay. I left slightly disappointed, but after voicing my concerns to the manager, he was eager to make it up to me! When I found myself back in DC several weeks later, Hotel Helix offered me a complimentary night in their wonderful Helix Suite.
Needless to say, I was over the plumbing issue after seeing the 700-square-foot suite. Hotel Helix also offers several free perks, including hula hoops, yoga mats, board games, bikes, and a complimentary wine happy hour. As you can see, the hotel has a cool retro vibe. I felt like I was on the set of Mad Men!
If you find yourself in DC, Hotel Helix is the perfect base for exploring the city. The price is right, as is the location – Hotel Helix is within walking distance to the White House, DuPont Circle, and a metro station. If you’re visiting over the weekend, be sure to check out the neighborhood’s brunch options! My favorites are Commissary and Slipstream.
